Ezra plays with the way that nostalgic memories can combine with the lessons of maturity as an individual develops a sense of personal ambition. Here, rollerblades symbolize the free-willed attitude of a young person, and show how a memory of such an attitude can serve as the platform from which adolescence changes into adulthood. Ezra has previously described the term ‘hello-old-friended’ as “something in ur life that inspires you to say ‘hello old friend’ every time you take it out” (Koenig). Obviously, by hello-old-friending his rollerblades, Ezra recruits the help of a meaningful token of his past to help him “glide out into the night” as a grown man. This journey, however, is not simply about physical and emotional change that takes place between childhood and adulthood. Ezra also begins the process of self-searching, in which he must figure out what kind of adult he truly wishes to be. The “wicked city” is himself, still plagued by the naivety and carelessness of childhood, and Ezra will not truly be a man until he can locate the righteousness that he knows he is capable of possessing deep within his psyche. As he reflects on his past and current states of being, he will ultimately shape the future Ezra that will continue to glide through the night for the remaining adult years of his life.

This brief yet effective string of words holds a greater meaning because of its elaborate imagery and use of metaphors. Ezra begins by setting a tone of competitive aggression which informs the way readers will digest his intensely reflective words that follow. He points to a conflict that all people experience at some point—the decision of whether or not to put oneself and one’s feelings first in the ventures of life. In a world that values selflessness and charity, it is easy for an individual to forget to take care of his or her basic needs. The choice of “a lil nutella” as a metaphor for the things in life that bring us joy suggests that Ezra sees life as something full of sweetness that should be relished and thoroughly enjoyed. This mindset, however, seems to be in clear opposition to his previous distrustful statement that we live in a “dog eat dog world.” It becomes clear that Ezra is not strongly committed to either of these supposed worldviews of negativity or positivity. Instead, he attempts to display how people are still able to appreciate the personally pleasing elements of life within an increasingly stressful and unsettling world. Not only does he advise his audience to find ways to intertwine these two opposite ends of human experience, he reminds them that “we all” need that sweet nutella that life has to offer every now and then. We are a collective unit of human beings in this world, and Ezra wants us to know that we are not alone in dealing with the issues that we usually blame ourselves for.
