Listening to live versions of songs is always hilarious because you can hear those assholes who probably spent the whole night waiting for that one quiet moment in the middle of a song that they could shout out something stupid and end up on the recording
I was planning to make this post right when the semester ended, but now will have to do. I had a really great semester, despite all of the time I spent complaining about stupid shit, and these were the best parts that made it so special.
ok i agree with you but violet swimming with dave and on the cover of wasting light is pretty funny
See but that’s exactly the kind of stuff that makes me uncomfortable…
I know it’s meant to get a laugh out of people, but I have to imagine it from the perspective of a parent, seeing a picture of your kid manipulated like that and passed around between people you’ve never met that have some big joke about it
Not that I’m dumb enough to think that celebrities look around tumblr and see the stuff made on here, it’s just such a weird thing to have to deal with when you’re famous I guess, and I still feel like it’s too intrusive sigh I don’t know
When is the internet going to learn to leave the kids of celebrities alone…? I mean, I guess it’s generally accepted that posting/reblogging pictures of said celebrities and their kids taken at events or whatever is fine. But making these little kids the center of jokes and making weird graphics, ENTIRE BLOGS and other shit that revolves around them and spreads around the internet like wildfire is just not okay, at least to me. I know it’s not done with bad intentions, but still. I can’t tell anyone else what to do or post. Talk about how cute you think so-and-so’s kid is all you want. But the children of celebrities don’t ask to be raised in the spotlight, and I think people need to show a bit more respect for normal people trying to have normal families.
I was fully intending to make this a list of 10, but I realized that I’m not even familiar enough with 10 albums of this year to do that. Oops. But you know what, this year I’ve been in touch with a lot more recently recorded music, and I’m very glad about that, so 5 will just have to do.
5 - Radiohead // The King of Limbs
The first time I heard this album was on a 9 hour flight from Phoenix to London over the summer, because it was available on the in-flight entertainment screens or whatever you call them. I listened to it at least 4 times on the way there, and probably another 4 on the way back. I’ve listened to it a few times since then, but I’ve realized that I really enjoy it the most when I’m just zoning out and not needing to focus much. I have written SO many college papers to this music in the past few months.
Favorite tracks: Little By Little, Lotus Flower
4 - The Lonely Island // Turtleneck and Chain
Surely you’ll remember when this was a Lonely Island appreciation blog for like 3 straight months. The anticipation of this album coming out was a lot of fun, and the day that it finally dropped was my final day of AP testing forever. I left school the second I finished my AP Gov test and drove to Best Buy and bought it. Of course everything on this album is hilarious and so much fun to listen to, but it was important to me because it kept me laughing through that really stressful month of testing and the end of my senior year. The end of high school and graduation were certainly made a lot more fun because of these idiots.
Favorite tracks: Japan, Mama, Jack Sparrow
3 - The Joy Formidable // The Big Roar
So, The Joy Formidable. Holy shit. I had honestly never even heard of them before I saw them listed as the opening band on my Foo Fighters ticket. I went into that concert not expecting much, because I hadn’t been very impressed by previous bands I had seen open for the Foos. But literally the second that those three started making noise, I was immediately drawn in. The wall of sound they create is incredible (especially for just three people), but the way it filled up Madison Square Garden was amazing, and I knew I had to become a fan of them. They were just SO GOOD live. So I bought their album the next day and I’ve hardly stopped listening to them since then. The recordings on the album are just as good as they sounded live, and the songs are really great. This band was undoubtedly the best musical discovery of this year for me, and I can’t recommend them enough.
Favorite tracks: A Heavy Abacus, The Greatest Light is the Greatest Shade, Whirring
2 - The Black Keys // El Camino
So 2011 was the year I fell in love with The Black Keys. It didn’t happen until like November, sadly, but I got myself familiar with their older albums before El Camino came out. I like how many of the songs are more upbeat than previous stuff, but it still sounds like them. The sound of Dan Auerbach’s guitars and vocals, mixed with the simplicity of the drums gives it that vibe that only The Black Keys can produce. I can’t get enough of these songs, man.
Favorite tracks: Stop Stop, Gold on the Ceiling, Little Black Submarines
1 - Foo Fighters // Wasting Light
SURPRISE!!! I bet you didn’t see this coming! But really, this album was the definition of 2011 for me. I had so many pivotal moments this year (graduation, moving to New York, blah blah) and this album really provided the soundtrack for so many of them. I connected with the lyrics in these songs more than any Foo album before. And it just ROCKS, man. It’s hard to find an album these days in which every song is great, but they did it here. Wasting Light was so huge for me this year that I even wrote about it for my final project in my writing class (oops?). I could write a novel about this stupid album and this stupid band, but I’ll resist the urge. If you haven’t listened to the whole thing, then you’re missing out.
Favorite tracks: ALL!!! (not kidding)
Honorable mentions: Arctic Monkeys // Suck It And See, The Strokes // Angles
do not log out if you are using chrome/missing e. because you will not be able to get back in unless you use an incognito window. it’ll just keep giving a ‘not found’ tumblr error page when you try to get to tumblr.com.
wait is this for real
because I do in fact log out because my parents think it’s really cool to use my laptop without asking when I’m home and I don’t want them coming anywhere fucking near my dashboard
they know about tumblr and everything but that is exactly why they would try to sneak on here and see “”“”“what it’s really all about”“”“”
